I have been in the real estate business for 10 years, and today I read some statistics that I found to be troubling, at best. It doesn’t surprise me when I hear a renter lament about the troubles of renting versus owning, but yesterday’s article in CNBC “Almost half of Americans have buyer’s remorse about their house” highlights some serious issues in today’s approach to real estate.
According to a recent survey by Trulia, 44% of Americans have regrets about their current home or the process they went through when choosing it, and of those surveyed, 33% wish they bought a bigger home and 9% wish they bought a smaller home. 41% of renters surveyed wish they would have bought instead.
Sometimes, buyers’ desires in a perfect home don’t align perfectly with what the market has available. This is understandable, however, this high percentage of regret in home buyers tells me expectations aren’t lining up with reality for a lot of buyers. As a realtor, I believe it is part of my job to make sure your expectations, both of your future home, and the home-buying process, line up with reality.
